Rachel's Guide to Newcastle and Beyond!
For the last week, the circus has been in Toon, The Moscow State Circus to be precise! I had my chance to check out the Big Top on the Town Moor on Saturday afternoon and I took my boyfriend, Mum, Dad, niece and nephew for a fun filled family day out that I was sure would entertain them all!
I did some reading up on the show beforehand and found out that it was called ‘Zhelaniy’ and was based on the Russian folklore story of Cvetik-Semicvetik, or “the flower with seven colours,” where each of the petals represent a wish. In the Moscow State Circus interpretation, each granted wish was then played out by awe-inspiring performers including the award winning Troupe Lentil, who wowed us on the flying parallel bars, Stynka Ensemble on the horizontal bouncing Russian bar, Veslovskiy the roller-skating revolutions and loads more!
We arrived just as the show was about to start so didn’t get chance to sample the refreshments on offer but there looked to be all the traditional sugary treats like candy floss as well as those glow in the dark toys you get at all the kids shows these days. The big top itself was very comfortable, thankfully it was air-conditioned and there was an interval half way through the two hour show.
It opened with a bang and kept us all enthralled throughout. The performances really were first class and I particularly loved the flying jugglers and the gorgeous dancers in the floating globes! The little ones seemed just as impressed as the adults and laughed hysterically at the hula hoop and trampoline acts.
As you can see it was pretty dark inside the big top which made it a bit tricky to capture the highlights on camera. For a better insight in to what the show offers take a look at this promotional video…
If you missed the Moscow State Circus during its visit to Newcastle, don’t worry, the next stop on the tour is just down the road in Darlington and it’s well worth the visit! You can catch the show from 1 – 4 September in the grounds of Raby Castle
