What I Thought of Tapas Revolution

March 31, 2017 in Eating Out 3

Sharing  tapas and sipping on homemade lemonade while discussing holiday plans with my fella was just the remedy I needed to banish the blues after a hectic day at work a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t have to venture far from my city centre office for this perfect pick me up because Tapas Revolution is one of the new restaurants to recently open in Grey’s Quarter (part of Intu Eldon Square shopping centre in Newcastle).

Usually when I’m craving tapas I head for independently owned El Coto or its sister on the Quayside, El Terroro. Tapas Revolution is a decent third option, although it’s a little pricier the location and service at this newcomer won me over, as did the absolutely delicious homemade lemonade – James nearly fell off his chair with shock when I said I preferred it to sangria but it really was THAT nice!

You have to try the amazing homemade lemonade!

The menu at Tapas Revolution offers a vast array of dishes and we really felt spoilt for choice! All the classics are on there, such as tortilla, croquetas de jamon, calamares, chorizo and freshly-made Churros. There are also ‘Platos’, large tapas dishes to share including Txuleton de ternera – Rib eye and Sirloin steak. Deciding what to order was so tough we had to ask for more thinking time not once but twice.

Then there was a little confusion because we saw people on the table next to ours enjoying a bowl of huge, juicy olives but we couldn’t see them anywhere on the menu. Thankfully our waitress fulfilled our olive request straight away and I happily munched away on them while we waited for the food we finally decided upon.

We couldn’t resist ordering a board of the Jamón Ibérico de bellota Montenevado, dry-aged 24+ month, acorn-fed Iberian ham, hand carved to order… it was a real treat! The manchego cheese was also delightful, I particularly loved the quince jelly that it was served with, a delicious alternative to honey.

After a selection of cold dishes we tucked in to Torreznos con Mojo (crispy pork belly), Bacalao con Piperrada (roasted cod loin with slow-cooked red peppers and olives), Gambas al Ajillo (tiger prawns with garlic and chilli oil cooked in a terracota dish) and Berenjenas Fritas con Miel (crispy fried aubergine with a spiced honey and thyme dressing).

We really enjoyed all the hot dishes, portion sizes were good with plenty to share. My only bug bear with the food was that the prawns were slightly overcooked. The belly pork was also well done but that just made it lovely and crispy and the sauce was sweet and sticky, that dish was one of my faves!

The decor in the restaurant is really nice and we quickly forgot we were sat in a shopping centre. I can certainly see myself popping in to Tapas Revolution again. I’d love to try some more dishes from the extensive menu and it will be interesting to see what the atmosphere is like when it’s really busy as I think that makes a tapas experience even more enjoyable.

Have you tried Tapas Revolution yet? Do you have any favourite dishes you think I should try?

I love the look of that Spanish ham hanging there in that photo near to top of your post. I reckon that would be the first thing I’d order, along with a glass of Rioja.
