My Thoughts on Smashburger

May 1, 2017 in Eating Out 5

I seem to be slowly but surely eating my way around Grey’s Quarter, the new foodhall at intu Eldon Square. So far I’ve enjoyed Tapas, Tagines and Thai food but on my latest visit I went in search of the perfect burger and after checking out the website for Smashburger my expectations were high.

The creators of Smashburger say their mission is… “to bring a fresh approach to burgers and help the nation burger better. That’s what we’re dedicated to, no, obsessed with — making burgers you seek out, something you crave. To us, beef isn’t a burger until it’s smashed and only the best quality, freshest beef. On a hot, buttered grill, we smash down, sealing in the flavors & caramelizing the burger, making it the juiciest, tastiest burger on the planet”.

Ambitious to say the least and although I can’t claim to have tried all the burgers on the planet I have sampled my fair share, so I’m pleased to report that I couldn’t find any faults with my Smashburger meal.

I kept it simple by ordering a large Signature Beef Bacon Cheeseburger (applewood smoked bacon with American cheese, mustard, ketchup, pickles & red onion on a Smash bun). There were more unusual options available featuring ingredients such as avacado, jalapeños and truffle mayo but call me old fashioned, I actually like my burgers to taste like burgers.

As the meat is smashed down on the grill during cooking it turns up looking large and flat but it was still a little pink in the middle and very juicy. My burger was accompanied by a large portion of SmashFries, which are basically normal French fries tossed in olive oil, rosemary and garlic (and thankfully not fries made from ‘Smash’ as I had suspected, silly me)! The fries were delicious but there was no way I could eat them all, think I’ll be going for a regular portion next time.

I really did enjoy the food but the highlight of my meal was a hand-spun chocolate shake blended with Häagen Dazs vanilla ice-cream. Oh. My. Days. It was insanely good and I will definitely be treating myself to one again before too long!

Smashburger has some tough competition in Newcastle as burger restaurants really seem to be the in thing at the moment and there are quite a few to choose from in the city but I would 100% recommend this place. The food was yummy, there are some interesting options for those who like to be a bit more adventurous with their food and seriously, those milkshakes… sooooo good!

My meal was complimentary in return for an honest review

They do have a lot of local competition and I personally don’t know whether they offer good value for money compared to the likes of Fat Hippo.

Oh wow! This looks really good! I will definitely give it a go now! I usually go for Byron Burger, but I may try something else now…after reading your review.
