Rachel's Guide to Newcastle and Beyond!
June 18, 2018 in Eating Out 2
As much as I love discovering hidden gems and sampling new restaurants in and around Newcastle, there’s an old favourite that I find myself venturing back to time and time again.
Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill never fails to disappoint on all the important factors of a first class dining experience, from wonderful friendly service to beautifully presented food that would satisfy even the fussiest eater! The restaurant is located on the ground floor of Hotel Indigo in the heart of the city and although a hotel might not be the first place you think of heading to for somewhere special to eat, MPW is well worth a visit!
I was recently invited along to sample the new a la carte menu along with a couple of other bloggers from the North East; Laura from the luxury blog www.elleblonde.com and Jennifer from the colourful lifestyle blog http://hellojenniferhelen.com/.
We were joined by the restaurant’s marketing manager Adam who was on hand to recommend dishes from the mouth-watering menu. I was glad to see that some of my best-loved dishes have remained like the traditional smoked salmon starter and the signature steaks that MPW is famous for. You can read about what I thought of these dishes on a previous review here.
We were spoilt for choice with the menu options and I was very tempted by the hickory smoked baby back ribs for my starter but I thought they might be a bit too messy and I didn’t want to look unsophisticated in front of my new friends, ha ha!
I eventually opted for the classic French onion soup with croutons and gruyere cheese which was absolutely delicious but probably just as messy as ribs would have been, the cheese was very stringy! I don’t usually order soup in restaurants, as it’s often a bit bland and boring but this was anything but! The onions were perfectly soft and sweet and the nutty flavour of the cheese balanced the dish beautifully.
The decision of what to choose for main course was a tough one, there’s a great selection to choose from. Laura couldn’t resist a steak and Jen went for one of the new dishes, Wheelerâs Coq and Shrimp Curry, it was served with buttered rice and fresh mango and it smelt amazing, the aroma reminded of holidays to Thailand!
I ordered a steakhouse burger, MPW has three different burgers to chose from; The French, the American and the Alex James, the latter is named after the blue cheese produced by the former bassist of Britpop band Blur. The American was my burger of choice and it did not disappoint! The juicy meat was perfectly pink and sandwiched between a soft brioche bun with the classic ingredients of salad, melted cheese and crispy bacon. There was a hint of barbecue flavour to the meat which was delicious and as with every meal I’ve ever ordered at MPW the portion size was very generous. The fries were yummy too, I love it when they are served with skins on but I had to leave a few as I knew the offer of dessert was coming and I didn’t want to be too full to miss out!
The desserts are to die for at Marco’s and I was tempted by everything on the menu from the chocolate mouse to the cheese board (which featured more of Alex James’ famous blue cheese). The other girls both had a sweet tooth like me so we were practically drooling as we deliberated our orders.
In the end I went for the comforting classic of fruit crumble with vanilla ice-cream. It was packed with juicy apple and blackberries that were a touch too tart for me so I couldn’t hide my jealousy as Laura and Jen tucked in to their epic portions of Eton Mess and Billionaire’s Shortbread. I am definitely going for the shortbread next time which had the appearance of cheesecake and was lavishly decorated with rich caramel and edible gold leaf, how decadent? I nearly pinched a bit from Jen when she wasn’t looking but I thought better of stealing dessert from a pregnant lady so I’ll have to visit MPW again soon so I can try it for myself!
