Rossopomodoro Review

July 1, 2016 in Eating Out 3

I’ve shared my love for Italian food many times on this blog but until recently I’d overlooked Rossopomodoro located in John Lewis, Newcastle. Shamefully, I’d dismissed it as just another average pizza chain… how wrong I was! A chain it may be but there is nothing average about Rossopomodoro!

James and I were kindly invited along to discover first hand what makes Rossopomodoro that little bit special and soon realised we were in for a treat when some foodie friends informed us it was their favourite pizza place in the Toon (could have told us sooner guys)!

Despite being a regular shopper at John Lewis I struggled to find the restaurant entrance, it was tucked away at the back of women’s wear, which meant we were slightly delayed as I ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ over the latest fashions. Once inside I was impressed by the fresh, modern decor. There were plenty of photos of Italy that brought back memories of happy holidays in my favourite European country and as the restaurant overlooks Chevy Chase in Eldon Square, it was great for people watching.

It didn’t take us long to spot our favourite beer on offer and we also let the friendly staff talk us in to ordering some ‘olive e lupini’ while we perused the menu. The olives were divine, there was a good mix of green and black and they were smothered in chilli and pepper!

We had to send the waiter away a couple of times as it took us ages to decide what main courses to order. I knew it had to be pizza as Rossopomodoro claims to be the home of the most authentic Neopolitan style pizza outside Naples. A bold claim indeed and one I can’t actually confirm as I’ve never actually been to Naples. I was definitely in pizza heaven though as I read the mouth-watering array of tempting toppings including buffalo ricotta, smoked mozzarella, Neopolitan salami and tangy pecorino.

After much deliberation I opted for the Ventura pizza (£13.45), a fresh and simple dish featuring some of my favourite ingredients, mozzarella, Parma ham, rocket, parmesan and basil. The pizza base had an incredible texture and lots of those wonderful air bubbles that you only get from using good quality ingredients and a mega hot pizza oven. I thought it was a bit on the pricey side but it really was delicious and so filling, I even had left overs for James.

James’ choice of Cozze e Zucchine (£14.95) was a rather unusual one for my Margarita loving boyfriend . This feast of a pizza was from the Gourmet section of the menu and was topped with mozzarella, courgettes, mussels and lemon slices. The menu had also promised chilli flakes but James said he couldn’t see or taste any and was a bit disappointed about that but he loved the mussels and said he would order it again.

The food at Rossopomodoro was every bit as good as we’d hoped and although it’s not cheap you can certainly taste the difference between the pizzas here and the happy hour ones in some of the cheap and cheerful Italians around town. Sometimes they have special offers on too so keep an eye on their twitter page to keep up to date.
