Rachel's Guide to Newcastle and Beyond!
October 17, 2017 in Eating Out 5
It may only be October but I have already indulged in my first Christmas dinner of the festive season, all in the name of research of course (the fact that I LOVE Christmas dinner and would happily eat it every day if I could is just a happy coincidence). Allow me to explain…
You may have noticed me waxing lyrical about the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar & Grill in Newcastle regularly on this blog and my twitter account, that’s because I am huge fan of the restaurant and a proud ambassador for it! As such, the management kindly gave me the opportunity to try out their 2017 Festive Menu before anyone else. When the invite landed in my inbox I immediately felt the need to throw on a Christmas jumper and start doing my best Noddy Holder impression…. ‘It’s Christmaaaaaaaas’!
The reservation was made and I invited a few blogger pals along for the occasion but as it was still only September at the time of our visit we decided to leave the Christmas jumpers at home.
Marco’s is located just a couple of minutes walk from Newcastle Central Station within Hotel Indigo so it’s a great meeting point and the plush Grainger Lounge offers the perfect setting for a pre-dinner drink. They serve platters of bar snacks with your drinks too which are yummy but a word of warning, the portions in the restaurant are very generous so don’t graze too much before your meal!
As the festive menu isn’t technically available till the 1st of December the girls and I had emailed our orders in advance. I was pleasantly surprised to see plenty of choice with several unexpected dishes alongside the Christmas classics. For instance there’s a fish pie on the menu, steak & frites and a mushroom tartlet with poached egg. They all sounded delicious but I just couldn’t resist the traditional options.
Before I give you my verdict on the star of the menu (the turkey dinner, obvs!) can we just have a moment to appreciate this perfect game pie…
I’m sorry but this little plate of heaven deserves to be shown from another angle too…
This perfectly presented starter was the surprise of the meal as I hadn’t really given much thought to it beforehand. In my family we don’t normally have starters on Christmas day but if we did, I would want this! The pastry was cooked to perfection and didn’t feel too heavy in my tummy. It sat on a bed of well seasoned spinach and was served with a super shiny red wine jus that glistened on the plate.
When the turkey dinner arrived, all piled up like a stack of Christmas treats, a huge grin spread across my face! The plate of food was well proportioned with plenty of thick juicy slices of turkey served on top of a layer of bread sauce, roasted potatoes and parnsips and topped with a pig in blanket and some crunchy stuffing, there was also a huge dollop of cranberry sauce on the side. I devoured every mouthful, yep, even the sprouts, I love them (just me?). A separate jug of gravy was also brought to the table because, you know, northern girls love gravy!
The grand finale of the festive feast was an absolutely divine black cherry and sherry trifle. It was huge, I don’t know how I found room, I like to think that my stomach has a separate compartment for dessert! Anyway, it really was delicious and actually tasted like Christmas in a glass.
You can check out other dishes on the festive menu (plus options for Christmas Day and NYE) by downloading the brochure HERE. Bookings are now being taken and the menu will be available from the 1st – 21st December. Three courses are £27.50 per person for lunch and £33 per person for dinner, under 12’s are half price.
