Family Fun at Blyth Beach

The Northumberland coast is one of my favourite places in the whole world, feeling the sand between my toes on the pristine beaches and hearing the sound of the crashing waves always reminds me how lucky I am to live in north east England.

I’ve spoken many times about my love for the tranquility of places like Bamburgh, Druridge Bay and Embleton Bay and I head to the coast with my family as much as I can but as my niece and nephew are only three, we made a beeline for one of the busier beaches on their most recent visit!

Blyth beach has it all, stunning ocean views, a golden sandy beach, two great playgrounds, a tempting fish and chip shop and an ice cream parlour with indoor seating. Plus all the practicalities that you need with toddlers like toilet facilities, lifeguards, showers and a free car park right next to the beach. It’s only a 24 minute drive from Newcastle too!

The icing on the cake at this fabulous beach is the row of brightly coloured huts that can be hired for just £16.50 for a whole day. I decided to do just that and our little beach hut named Lobster was the perfect base for our family day out.

The beach huts in Blyth are the only huts in Northumberland, there are 20 altogether – 2 rows of 10. Each hut has a timber decked terrace at the back and comes equipped with a kettle and 4 deck chairs. The location is great because whether the kids wanted to play on the park or the beach, they were in our sight the whole time!

We took a picnic so I can’t comment on the nearby eateries but our neighbours in the hut next door tucked into fish and chips at lunchtime and the smell wafting across the terrace was amazing!

Thankfully it stayed dry all day (you can bet your life it would have poured down if I hadn’t hired the hut!) and although the sea was far from warm we couldn’t resist a paddle! It was great to know we could splash about as much as we wanted because we had the privacy of the hut to retreat to when it was time to get changed and plenty of hot chocolate to warm us all up.

The day went by far too quickly but we left with shoes full of sand and heads full of wonderful memories, in fact, Jack and Emily even told me they were going to dream about the seaside when I tucked them in to bed. They fell asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillow, must have been all that sea air!
