A Guide to the Best Hotels in Newcastle

January 31, 2016 in Eating Out 17

I’m often asked for my advice on where to stay by people coming to Newcastle for a city break or business trip and I love helping visitors discover the best of what this great city has to offer. As I live just a couple of miles from the city centre it’s rare that I actually stay in a hotel myself but I have had a snoop around many thanks to launch parties, conferences and events. I’ve also canvassed opinion among friends, frequent visitors and tourist bods to bring you my ultimate guide to the best hotels in and around the city.

Whatever brings you to the Toon, I hope this list helps you find the perfect place to stay!

The Best Budget Hotels

Euro Hostel is a great choice for big groups on a budget such as stag do’s and backpackers, prices start from just £16 per person, per night! It’s got a funky, modern feel and a great bar called Warerooms which is the perfect place to start a night out in Newcastle.

Sleeperz is just a stone’s throw from Newcastle Central Station and although king rooms start from around £55 including breakfast they certainly don’t look cheap! Book direct and you also get a £5 voucher to spend in the bar.

The Best Luxury Hotels

hotel du vin newcastle

Hotel du Vin is a charasmatic hotel close to the Quayside

Hotel Du Vin offers elegant, contemporary rooms with stylish finishing touches in an Edwardian building filled with character. It originally belonged to the Tyne Tees Shipping Company so expect a subtle nod to a nautical theme. I’ve had some great meals in the restaurant and can highly recommend the Sunday Brunch.

Malmaison Newcastle is a stunning building on the banks of the Tyne, inside is pretty plush too, the suites look out of this world! I’ve been to several events here and they aways have a touch of glamour about them. The Brasserie is great for cocktails and afternoon tea and there’s even a spa in the basement which offers a haven of tranquility.

There’s also an abundance of luxurious retreats just a short drive from Newcastle. From fairytale castles like Langley Castle in Northumberland to sumptuous spa hotels like Ramside Hall near Durham. So if you’re willing to travel a few miles outside of the city centre you can be in the lap of luxury in no time!

The Best Aparthotels

roomzzz-newcastle-city

Make yourself at home at Roomzzz: Credit Roomzzz

Roomzzz has 14 luxurious apartments with all the facilities you need to feel right at home. I love the original features of the building and its brilliant location just behind central station. If the reviews on Tripadvisor are anything to go by then Roomzzz is one of Newcastle’s most loved places to stay with nearly 300 people giving it a top score.

The Vermont Aparthotel opened in August 2015 and set a new standard for self catering accommodation in the city centre. There’s 11 spacious apartments with contemporary, high end furnishings and guests can even make use of the butler service and chauffeur driven Rolls Royce!

The Best Hotels for Shopping Trips

Marriott Metrocentre… the clue is in the name, this hotel is within throwing distance of Europe’s biggest shopping centre, Intu Metrocentre in Gateshead. The hotel itself might look a bit dated but its four star amenities include a pool and 98% of guests would recommend it.

Sandman Signature Hotel Newcastle

Sandman Signature know how to keep shoppers happy. Credit: Sandman Signature

Sandman Signature offers a bespoke shopping package that’s hard to resist. It includes a late check out, a goody bag from Intu Eldon Square filled with treats including a £20 gift card and breakfast for two to help you re-charge the next morning. The 170  room hotel is popular with sports fans too, it’s just across the road from St James’ Park, the NUFC football ground where rugby league fans will also flock for Magic Weekend in May.

The Best Hotels with Spa Facilities

mineral house

City centre hotel spas don’t come much better. Credit: Mineral House at Crowne Plaza

Crown Plaza has made a big impression on visitors since its launch in September 2015. North East Bloggers have raved about Hawthorns Restaurant and The Gin Bar and I love the look of the stylish, spacious rooms. It’s the Mineral House Spa that really catches my eye though. No other hotel in the city centre offers spa amenities of this level! There’s a steam room, spa pool, relaxation room, three treatment rooms and a ten metre feature pool. Take me there now!

Seaham Hall is a five star spa hotel about half an hour away from Newcastle by car. It’s won a heap of awards and as soon as you step inside the magnificent Georgian county house you can see why. The Serenity Spa boasts a staggering 44, 000 square feet of tranquil space to unwind in, including an inviting 20 metre pool, outdoor hot tubs, a hydrotherapy pool, plunge pool, sauna, hammam… the list goes on. This place is definitely on my list of places to visit in 2016.

The Best Hotels for Foodies

Eslington Villa was where I went for my birthday meal last year and I couldn’t fault a thing. It’s a bit of a hidden gem, off the beaten track in an area called Low Fell in Gateshead but it’s well worth searching out for it’s warm welcome and outstanding cuisine.                                                                                                                                                                                   8 Station Rd, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear NE9 6DR, www.eslingtonvilla.co.uk

Hotel Indigo is in the heart of Newcastle and proudly boasts a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse. It has a fantastic reputation which I’m sure must be largely due to the talents of head chef Paul Amer. If you are lucky enough to dine here I urge you to order from his specials board, you will not be disappointed!

venison jesmond dene house tasting menu newcastle restaurant

I was blown away by the food at Jesmond Dene House

Jesmond Dene House could easily be listed under best luxury hotels as there really is no where else quite like it in Newcastle. Full of character, with a unique, idyllic location and free from the constraints of being part of a chain, this independent boutique hotel is somewhere really rather special. I recently had the pleasure of experiencing an eleven course tasting menu in the restaurant and it was a gastronomic feast I’ll never forget! Read my full review HERE.

Best Hotels for Nightlife

vermont

The Vermont has Newcastle’s vibrant nightlife right on it’s doorstep, not to mention several great bars of its own! Start your evening with cocktails in the Redwood Bar overlooking Newcastle Castle or head up to the Sky Lounge for breathtaking views of NewcastleGateshead Quayside. Then put your dancing shoes on and head to Livello, on opulent late night bar at the back of the hotel where the beautiful people of Newcastle love to let their hair down.
Castle Garth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1RQ, www.vermont-hotel.com

Hampton by Hilton has a great location for anyone coming to the Toon to party and arriving by train. As soon as you step out of Newcastle central station, you’ll see the Hampton just across the road and it’s within staggering distance of tons of great bars too, including Tokyo, Revolution and Floritas. I stayed here a few weeks ago after a boozy night out with work, the bed was incredibly comfy and the huge buffet breakfast really hit the spot!
Neville St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5EN, www.hamptoninn3.hilton.com

I could go on… there are over 7000 bedrooms available in Newcastle and the surrounding areas with everything from cosy B&B’s by the coast to lavish stately homes in the country, not to mention plenty of the usual chain hotels like Travelodge, Jurys Inn, Premier Inn and Ramada. We have so many hotels don’t we! Spoilt for choice! Steve and I stay in Newcastle a couple of times per year as often the deals are better than 2 taxis. We stayed in one of the suites in the Hotel Du Vin about 5 years ago and that sticks out as one of our favourites – we had side by side roll top baths with a tv! Talk about decadent!

Roomzzz looks amazing and not overly priced during the week either. There are so many I’d like to try out but not sure if I would living so close to them.

Great post, I love nebbing through hotel rooms!

I want to make it my mission to stay in all the posh hotels in the area, you can often get a great bargain if you book out of season mid week. Not doing too well though, so far we’ve only stayed at Jesmond Dene House! We booked a suite to celebrate our first anniversary and it’s still the best hotel we’ve ever stayed in!

Wow great blog post. I didn’t realise that we had so many lovely hotels round here. It would be nice to treat ourselves to dinner out and a hotel. Might have to wait until the kids are older though.
