Rachel's Guide to Newcastle and Beyond!
January 29, 2018 in Eating Out 8
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I thought I would pull together a little list of some of my favourite places for date night. Newcastle is such a sensual city, full of beautiful buildings, romantic restaurants and big hearted people. It’s also where I met the love of my life and many of the places listed below hold happy memories for us so bear with me if I get all soppy on you!
I fell in love with the Tyneside Cinema from the moment I clapped eyes on its stunningly preserved art deco features. There’s something very magical about watching a movie in the ‘classic screen’, especially if you choose the luxury seats in the circle.
This Valentine’s Day the Tyneside Cinema is showing the rom-com ‘Sleepless in Seattle’, tickets can be booked to include a special meal in the Tyneside Bar Cafe with plenty of aphrodisiac treats on the menu!Ā Booking is essential, check out the website for details.
As you can tell by the huge grins on our faces above, James and I love a sharing steak! We’ve dined at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse on many occasions and it never disappoints. Book one of their cosy booths for an intimate meal for two and make sure you arrive hungry, the portions are huge! The restaurant is on the ground floor of Hotel Indigo so you could even make a night of it! Read about our recent overnight stay and amazing meal in this blog post.

Who doesn’t love a spa day? It’s a chance to turn off the gadgets and re-connect with your partner in the blissful surroundings of a place totally devoted to pampering and well-being!
Mineral House is located within the Crown Plaza Hotel in the centre of Newcastle and they do some great value mid-week packages from Ā£55 per person including a choice of treatments plus a classic cocktail and afternoon tea or lunch in the hotel’s restaurant Hawthorns.

There will always be a special place in my heart for The Cluny as it’s where I met my fella, at a northern soul night back in 2003. Since then we’ve been back to The Cluny many times to see local and touring bands, we’re heading there again in March to see Y.O.U.N.G, I’m sure the atmosphere will be as lively and welcoming as ever.
You don’t need to spend loads of money to enjoy a memorable night out with your loved one. One of the nicest things James did for me last year was to pack a flask and plan a road trip to Northumberland after I’d had a particularly tough day.
He’d heard that a meteor shower was expected and because Newcastle is so close to the largest area of protected night sky in Europe, it wasn’t long before we wereĀ in the middle of nowhere sharing a plastic mug of lukewarm coffee while the stars danced above us. It was so romantic!
The Kielder Observatory offers an exciting programme of astrological events throughout the year, check out the website for details.

Huh, I lived in Heaton between about 1989-1992, and it seems like some of these are certainly new since then. We just went to Jesmond Dean and kickboxing and I worked at a wholefoods store. It was a decent place, but not so much of excitement for dates!
So many great ideas, love the stargazing – weāre yet to do that. We havenāt made a plan yet but Iām guessing weāll end up at home on the sofa!
Ooooh stargazing is top of my list… really really want to do this with my husband. Maybe we’ll do this for Valentine’s Night and take a flask of soup š
Great list of ideas here – me and my girlfriend went to Iceland last year in the hope of seeing the northern lights. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to because it was cloudy every day. However, we camped out in Kielder, not long after returning from Iceland and we actually saw the Aurora lights!!! – it’s a beautiful experience and another reason why the North East is such a fantastic place to live. Also, I would add the Royal Theatre to your list. I bought tickets for my girlfriend’s birthday to see The Woman In Black (OK not too romantic). I… Read more »
